Friction Fire Workshop

In this workshop we will be using both the bow-drill and hand-drill methods to create a friction fire by spinning a piece of wood into another piece of wood.

Participants will learn each step of the process, starting with how to find appropriate materials to carving the parts for a drill to making a fire.

This will be a potluck event. We will have plenty of hot dogs/veggie dogs to roast on the fire along with some other refreshments. Please bring a side dish to share, along with your own reusable plate/bowl/cup/spoon/fork to help reduce waste. You are welcome to bring any adult beverages to enjoy at the end of the workshop (just, please, don't drink and drive). We will have a nice campfire going as evening rolls around. Folks are welcome to hang out after the workshop and set up camp for the night (optional).

This workshop will be led by earth skills expert, Fern Truitt.

About the workshop leader: Fern Truitt is a naturalist and a Jill-of-all trades. She grew up learning many primitive skills and, after much study and practice, has become an expert. She leads workshops on a wide variety of these skills including friction fire, collecting wild edibles, blacksmithing, basket weaving, primitive cooking, tracking, bow making, etc. She is also an experienced gardener and hunter and she preserves much of her own food. Fern has a wealth of knowledge and experience; you'll be surprised how much you can learn by spending a day with her.
